Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together lies a intense meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story commences when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that arise in any relationship after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.
