A recent study reveals that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such treatments should be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Doctors suggest the way of the drugs explains the heightened regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said a patient.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
